Startup Island TAIWAN works to revitalize Taiwan’s startup ecosystem and support market entry into Japan. As part of a startup branding project promoted by Taiwan, they organize various events to facilitate matching between Taiwanese startups and Japanese companies.
Recently, VoicePing provided real-time translation services at an event held in Osaka, enabling Taiwanese startup presentations and English discussions to be smoothly understood by Japanese investors and companies by overcoming language barriers. Additionally, VoicePing was implemented as a translation tool for StartupSphere to be held in Taipei, Taiwan in September. We spoke with Project Manager Anita to learn about the background of VoicePing’s implementation and its actual effects.
Bridging Taiwan and Japan - Startup Island TAIWAN's Initiatives
Could you tell us your name and role at Startup Island TAIWAN?
Anita:
I’m Anita. I work as a Project Manager at Startup Island TAIWAN, which is Taiwan’s startup branding office.
My main job involves bringing Taiwanese startups to Japan and supporting their market development. Beyond activities like this one in Osaka, for example, last year we held matching events and investor networking sessions in Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Kitakyushu, bringing various Taiwanese startups.
I also work on Taiwanese startup PR. We’re working to increase exposure in Japan. I write press releases, issue press releases on PR TIMES, manage Twitter, and send out newsletters.
Do you frequently hold multilingual events like this one?
Anita:
Yes. From large events like the “Japan-Taiwan Innovation Summit” in Tokyo, to actually being in Kyoto now working with local partners on events. We often hold events where languages are mixed. In the Japanese market, we recommend companies present in Japanese as much as possible, but some people still prefer to pitch in English. So situations where languages are mixed within a single session happen quite frequently.
VoicePing Implementation Triggered by Fukuoka Experience
VoicePingを導入することにした背景について教えてください。

Anita:
Last year, three colleagues from our company and I went to Ramen Tech. At that time, the startup support management company was using VoicePing’s service. Honestly, we didn’t know the company name VoicePing at that time, but the QR code was displayed at the venue, and we actually used it there. My two colleagues didn’t understand Japanese, but by using VoicePing, they seemed to be able to understand the pitch content conducted at the event. Having that experience, we had a very good impression. So this year, we decided to actually try using VoicePing ourselves. The accuracy seemed high, and it supported various languages. We remembered that you could use it immediately by scanning a QR code on smartphones without needing to install apps, so we decided to try using VoicePing at this Osaka event and the StartupSphere event held in Taipei.
We contacted the person who was in charge of Ramen Tech last year, asking “Could you introduce us to the service provider we used at the event last year?” Through that person, we inquired about VoicePing.
How was it when you actually implemented VoicePing?
Actual interview footage
Anita:
It was simpler than expected and setup was quick. In our discussions leading up to the day, we mentioned that we didn’t have an audio team for event management, so the method of connecting the venue’s audio equipment to PC was unclear, but on the actual day, we could use it immediately in less than an hour, which was good.
What was particularly convenient was that even without specifying languages in advance, local people could choose their preferred language. Being able to respond to people’s needs was great. Not all Taiwanese founders speak Chinese – there were people raised in America too, so we had a mix of people speaking English and Chinese. In that context, I think we were able to meet everyone’s needs.
High Praise from Users and Future Expectations - Synergy Created by Ease of Use and Multilingual Support
How was the reaction from team members and users?
Anita:
We didn’t create surveys or anything special, but my team members and I tried using it, and they were surprised. The speed of implementation and the fact that by scanning the QR code, you could choose from various languages. We think it’s more convenient than the AI tools we’ve used before.
Compared to other translation tools, what were VoicePing’s advantages?
Anita:
The AI tools we used before weren’t viewed on our own smartphones, but were displayed directly on screens, and only converted from one language to one language, unable to support translation to various languages. The fact that customers could choose on their respective devices was definitely a good point.
Are there any areas for improvement or requests?
Anita:
Regarding advance distribution and posting of QR codes, I think if we had coordinated more thoroughly in advance, we could have announced VoicePing to more people so they could use it.
Future Prospects and VoicePing's Potential - Expectations for Language Support in Asian Expansion
Could you tell us about Startup Island TAIWAN’s future goals?

(Provided by: Startup Island TAIWAN)
Anita:
The Japanese market has the highest priority for Taiwanese companies, so we will continue to support expansion into Japan and startup support. Startup Island TAIWAN’s Tokyo office was also established last September.
We might also expand to Osaka and other regions. Until now we’ve approached Kansai, Tokyo, Fukuoka and other areas, but it would be good to reach more rural cities like Hokkaido too. We’re also considering deepening exchanges and connections with Japan further.
In other regions, we’re expanding to Korea, Southeast Asia, and America. There were opportunities for European expansion, but that’s still in the preparation stage. Next year or the year after, we might increase the number of countries and destinations a bit more.
VoicePing supports not only Japanese but also Korean, Vietnamese, and about 40 languages, so we’d be grateful if you could use it on those occasions.
Anita:
Our team is also active in many regions. In places like Thailand, we feel language barriers quite a bit, so if there’s an opportunity, we’d definitely like to do so.
Summary
We’ve introduced a case study of implementing VoicePing at a matching event in Osaka by Startup Island TAIWAN.
At this important occasion connecting Taiwanese startups with Japanese investors and companies, VoicePing’s real-time translation function removed language barriers and created an environment where each participant could understand content in their most comfortable language.
What was particularly impressive was Anita’s high evaluation of the point that “customers can choose languages on their side.” While conventional translation tools required fixing translation languages in advance, VoicePing’s flexibility allowing participants to select optimal languages according to their individual needs was confirmed to be essential for diverse international events.
Also, looking at the flow from the initial experience in Fukuoka to this formal implementation, we can see the importance of actually providing usage experience. VoicePing’s ease of use – “just scan the QR code with no app installation required” – enabled rapid implementation in busy event management settings.
We will continue to support global activities like those of Startup Island TAIWAN and contribute to promoting business exchanges that transcend language barriers.
