Overcoming Language Barriers in International Projects: VoicePing Implementation Case Study at Tekken Construction

As international construction projects continue to increase, communication within multinational teams has become increasingly important. In this case study, we interviewed Michael and Kim from the Management Division at Tekken Construction Co., Ltd., who have implemented VoicePing for multilingual meetings in their international projects.

Language Challenges in International Projects and the Path to Solutions

Could you tell us about your respective roles?

Michael: My name is Michael Chew. I’m originally from Canada and work in the Management Division at Tekken Construction. As a Native English speaker, my main responsibilities involve liaising with foreign personnel involved in international projects, facilitating communication between multinational team members, as well as translating documents.

Kim: My name is Kim Konan. I’m originally from China and joined the company in 2012. I worked in the Civil Engineering Division managing construction projects internationally. My main responsibility is contract management, and I currently work in the same department as Michael.

What was the background for introducing VoicePing?

Michael: Since we have international projects, we frequently hold online meetings to communicate with on-site personnel. While English serves as our common language, some employees don’t understand English very well, so we needed to find a way to enable their participation.

We had been using other real-time translation apps previously, but they often failed to pick up audio and pronunciation accurately, resulting in incomprehensible transcriptions. While investigating other apps to improve this situation, we happened to discover VoicePing and decided to try it. We were absolutely amazed by the results.

Post-Implementation Changes: From "Incomprehensible and Hard to Follow" to "Accurate"

How has your experience been using it?

Michael: It’s extremely convenient. We had become accustomed to incomprehensible transcriptions, so when we suddenly got accurate transcriptions, we were truly surprised in the best possible way. We decided to implement it immediately.

We had a trial period first, and after experiencing its effectiveness firsthand, we proceeded with the official implementation.

In what situations do you use it?

Michael: We primarily use it in web meetings. In terms of languages, we mostly use it for English to Japanese translation. We mainly use Teams, and basically use it internally (only on our company side). We rarely share the translation with the other party. Since no special setup is required, we can immediately use it with other meeting apps besides Teams. We can open VoicePing on a separate screen and use it right away, so it’s very easy to use and convenient.

We’re very satisfied with the fact that we can just open the app and use it immediately. The ability to use it without inconveniencing the other party is also a big plus.

Specialized Terminology Support: Practical Applications in the Construction Industry

Are there any issues with construction industry-specific terminology?

Michael: Not really any problems. Of course, the construction industry frequently uses specialized terminology that isn’t widely known, but from my experience, I haven’t felt any discomfort. Regarding VoicePing’s word selection, it seems like it can handle any field effectively.

Team-wide Utilization and Impact

How do you handle screen display in meeting rooms?

Michael: We have various meeting rooms, but most have one large screen. In those cases, we display VoicePing on that large screen so that everyone physically present in the meeting can see it. Some members prefer to use VoicePing on their phones.

What has been the reaction from team members?

Michael: People who had actually used the previous app were particularly surprised, having become accustomed to incomprehensible transcriptions. We tested it in various ways, including having people try it with their own voices and reading difficult sentences aloud, and all participants were very impressed with the accurate transcription.

The Decisive Factor in Choosing VoicePing

Michael: The accuracy was outstanding. Team members had a strong demand for accurate translation in real-time translation. But from my perspective, I think accurate transcription is more important than translation itself.

If you translate with some missed or inaccurate words, you end up with inaccurate translation as well. VoicePing seems to have AI that slightly edits the captured data to make sense before translating, which ultimately produces accurate results. That was the biggest factor for us.

Future Prospects and Expectations

Any improvement requests or additional features?

Michael: There aren’t any particular improvements needed, but as long as you continue providing meaningful and comprehensible translations, there are no problems. And that’s exactly what you’re already doing.

About future company-wide deployment?

Michael: Since it’s quite a large company, we might expand VoicePing to other employees as well. Having flexible plans would be very helpful.
