VoicePing team attended Microsoft’s “OpenHack for Lakehouse” to learn latest data science technology

VoicePing, a Japanese company focused on developing virtual office software for remote collaboration, recently sent three of its team members to participate in Microsoft’s “OpenHack for Lakehouse” event. This intensive, short-term hackathon was designed for developers to hone their skills and familiarize themselves with the latest data science collaborative technology. Over the course of two days, participants explored the Azure Databricks environment to handle tasks ranging from data preparation to machine learning model creation and monitoring.

Event info

The event, aimed at providing practical experience for participants, featured real-world business and corporate challenges that were tackled using Microsoft Azure’s tools and resources. Tech coaches were assigned to each team, ensuring that participants could collectively solve problems and learn from one another. The VoicePing team was joined by two professionals from other companies, working together to address various challenges within the Azure Databricks platform.

Azure Databricks, built on Apache Spark, is a cloud-based data analytics platform that tightly integrates with other Microsoft services. It is particularly well-suited for machine learning and business intelligence applications. With three modes of operation – Data Science & Engineering, Machine Learning, and SQL Analytics – it offers a versatile and powerful toolset for organizations looking to make data-driven decisions.

During the event, participants worked on notebooks, data visualization, and analysis tasks in the Data Science & Engineering mode. This collaborative environment supports multiple programming languages and job scheduling, ensuring that teams can work together effectively. The Machine Learning mode offers an automated machine learning tool, distributed training, and a model registry, enabling teams to build, train, and deploy machine learning models with ease. In SQL Analytics mode, data analysts and business intelligence professionals can analyze and visualize data using SQL queries, with SQL endpoints and JDBC/ODBC drivers available. Additionally, Delta Lake can be used to improve SQL query reliability and performance.

Throughout the two-day event, VoicePing’s team members gained valuable insights into Azure Databricks and its potential applications in their own business. By working closely with their fellow group members and benefiting from the guidance of tech coaches, the VoicePing team saw firsthand the power of collaborative problem-solving.

As the event came to a close, the team left with a deeper understanding of Azure Databricks and its potential for supporting data-driven decisions in their virtual office software development. The OpenHack for Lakehouse event proved to be a valuable learning experience, not only in terms of technology but also in terms of collaboration and teamwork.

As VoicePing looks to the future and considers incorporating AI technologies into its business, the knowledge and experience gained at the OpenHack for Lakehouse event will no doubt play a significant role. By investing in its team members and fostering a culture of learning and collaboration, VoicePing is well-positioned to continue its pursuit of innovative remote work solutions. The company’s participation in events such as OpenHack for Lakehouse demonstrates its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements and ensuring the success of its clients in the ever-evolving landscape of remote work.

Personal opinions:

Melnikov Ivan, AI/Web developer

The OpenHack for Lakehouse event was a truly fascinating experience for me. Working alongside other professionals from the industry and sharing knowledge with them made it all the more exciting. I was genuinely surprised by the ease of collaboration on data science projects using Azure Databricks, which led to a more effective workflow, even when handling vast amounts of data. This experience has given me valuable insights into the industry’s progress and solidified my belief in the potential benefits of implementing such software in our business in the future. The event has left me eager to explore further opportunities to apply these new learnings at VoicePing.

Aida – Web engineer

I myself had only Web development

Being able to learn practical skills in data engineering and machine learning model creation using Azure Databricks through challenges based on real business scenarios had a great impact on my future business and career.

Through this event, I will be able to apply the skills and knowledge I gained to help me in data-driven decision making to my future development.

Jiromaru – Web engineer

This event was very fulfilling from both a technical and business standpoint because my main tasks are usually in the area of web applications (100% in the area of engineering). I was able to gain knowledge of data science and engineering.

On the technical side, I learned about the general flow of processing and processing in data analysis and how AzureDatabricks is working, which helped me to understand how I should acquire knowledge in the area of data analysis in the future.

On the  business side, data is meaningless unless it is in a usable state, and I was able to learn what exactly I need to do to make it usable.

I would like to use the experience of this event as a stepping stone for my future growth and apply it to my work at the company.
